Ooh! Where is this? I need a new four. I lost mine somewhere. It’s lucky that dryer was there to prop that sign up, or it might have gone unnoticed.

Of course, if this were written phonetically (standard British English at any rate), the ‘spelling’ would be correct for ‘four’ and ‘for’:
/fɔ:/

Unless you come from the north, as I do, in which case ‘four’ sounds like /fʊə/

My linguistics teacher always said he couldn’t hear the difference when I said these two words, but they certainly sounc different to me!
