I imagine the Guardian error came about because “towering” used to be a different word, and an editor forgot to edit the article too (pardon the pun).

The question is, what was the word previously? Outstanding? Eponymous? Existant?

I’m really interested by that too.

I was reading ‘Homage to Catalonia’ recently, and Orwell uses ‘an hotel’, which I’m inclined to use but am often corrected having done so. It does sound clumsy but so what?

I really don’t want to put the Guardian on the list. We need balance, I am considering buying the Daily Mail everyday just to search for errors.

On the subject of ‘a’ and ‘an’I get annoyed at the inconsistency before words beginning in H.

Why is it an historic occasion and an heroic death but a hopeless situation and a hick?
